Displays
Sure View reflect screen options
These are a switchable privacy filter option carried over from the EliteBook 800 G10.
When turned off, Sure View reflect displays are visible from all angles, looking similar to a standard display. Hitting the dedicated screen shutter key switches the screen to a narrow viewing angle - the user will see screen content when viewed head-on. Screen contents will be hidden from anyone off-centre and appear to be more mirror-like (as above). All Sure View options run at 1920 x 1200 resolution and may be available with touch screen or BrightView glossy options depending on model.
BrightView or Anti-glare
This is HP's gloss display option, providing deeper blacks for higher contrast. Many teams opt for the matte Anti-glare alternative option to reduce reflections in office lighting environments.

100% sRGB vs 45% NTSC
Entry level screens are capable of displaying 45% of the NTSC colour gamut. Creative teams should opt for 100% sRGB options to enable production-ready colour management. As these are measured on different scales, we calculate 100% sRGB to be equal to or greater than 72% of the NTSC gamut (at least 60% more colours than the 45% NTSC entry-level screen). Colour gamut limits are more noticeable for deeper and brighter colours. Dreamcolor and OLED options provide greater colour accuracy again with substantially greater contrast.
DreamColor & OLED
The 840 DreamColor and 860 OLED options are recommended for users creating Full HD content - their higher resolutions enable unzoomed content to be edited in software including Photoshop and Powerpoint while displaying application toolbars. These options are equivalent to those available on G10 models, providing a high quality alternative to full-workstations for content creators. OLED screens effectively provide unlimited contrast given the display's pixels emit light directly instead of shuttering a backlight, and provide the greatest colour performance currently available on a laptop. Dark themes for applications including Outlook, Photoshop & Windows 11 can help decrease battery drain for OLED displays.

New service will see hundreds of Surface computers repaired
instead of replaced
In 2020, New Zealand created 80,000t of e-waste – only 1600t (or 2%) of that was recycled. When it comes to computers, the majority of e-waste comes from business.
Because of this, Microsoft has launched a local repair service for its Surface range of laptops and tablets for business. Where previously Surface devices were swapped with replacements (and faulty devices exported for refurbishment), they are now repairable within New Zealand through The Laptop Company – the country’s first Surface Authorised Service Provider.
With 88% of overall CO2-equivalent emissions coming from initial device production and shipping, repairing otherwise-perfect devices is the single largest way to reduce CO2-e and e-waste, rather than chucking and replacing with new.
“We’re thrilled to be able to offer this service to our Microsoft customers in a really great step forward in terms of sustainability,” says The Laptop Company’s CEO, Mark Mayo. “By opting for repairs over replacements, the carbon footprint of broken or faulty devices is drastically reduced, as faulty units are no longer exported for remanufacture. Being able to repair Surface devices here in NZ means things like broken screens and ports will no longer result in people sending otherwise perfect devices to recycling or landfill.”
The Laptop Company will offer the repair service to fleet owners including through their Renew service, which takes broken and out-of-warranty devices, repairs them and reinjects them into fleets to reduce e-waste and unnecessary replacement device purchases.
“We’re pleased to be able to locally employ technicians. Our service centres in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin mean fleet owners can access prompt and reliable repairs and get their users back to business quickly,” says Mayo.
By extending the useful life of broken devices that are otherwise perfect, The Laptop Company is helping deliver Microsoft’s vision for reducing the carbon footprint of New Zealand workplaces.
“Repairability is a huge issue worldwide, and the average New Zealander produces more than 21kg of e-waste each year. We believe everyone should have safe, reliable, and sustainable options to repair devices rather than sending them to landfill, but sending them to repairers offshore also had an environmental impact. This announcement by The Laptop Company means Kiwis can not only cut emissions by having their devices repaired, but have them repaired locally by a trusted partner, which is great news for our planet and for our customers too,” says Menisha Naran, Senior Marketing Lead, Surface Devices for Microsoft Asia.

What is the Surface Laptop Studio 2?
This is Microsoft's Surface flagship convertible. With a pull-forward display, the device switches from laptop, to easel or tablet without the user needing to undock or unplug their device during use. It is one of the only mobile workstations on the market that provides pen and touch interactivity, which can be a boon for creatives, especially at the concept stage. The device is pitched at power users including GIS, engineering, architecture, motion picture, modelling, game development, forecasting, creative, developer, AI, and data science teams.

More memory options
The new model now supports up to 64GB memory with 16 and 32GB options available. Memory is not upgradeable, so choose wisely based on your application workloads. Memory has also been upgraded from LPDDR4x to LPDDR5x for faster throughput and lower power consumption.
More connectivity
The new model adds a USB Type A port for legacy devices including wireless keyboard dongles. Bluetooth connectivity is also upgraded from 5.1 to Bluetooth 5.3, and wireless networking is upgraded from Wi-Fi 6 to Wi-Fi 6E with 6GHz compatibility.
More repairable
Repairability remains the most important way to reduce the carbon foot print and e-waste associated with your devices - especially when minor components are damaged on otherwise perfect devices.
The Surface Laptop Studio 2 features the most repairable design to date, including replaceable display, mainboard, casing, and ports - making things like accidental cord-trip damage a much lower risk to your total cost of ownership.

The industrial design of the Surface Laptop Studio is maintained including:
- Raised plinth base for efficient cooling under heavy loads to reduce performance throttling
- Flip-forward screen with high resolution 14.4 inch PixelSense Flow display
- Up to 120Hz display refresh rate (switchable from 60Hz for actions including page scrolling and pen-inking in supported applications)
- Dolby Vision IQ support.
- Touch screen with Surface Pen support
- Up to 2TB removable high speed SSD storage
- Glass trackpad and backlit keyboard
- USB-C / Thunderbolt 4 ports, Surface Connect and audio port
- Magnetic stowage and wireless charging for optional Surface Slim Pen 2
- 1080p webcam with Windows Hello face authentication
- Quad Omnisonic speakers with Dolby Atmos
- Battery life with 512GB or 1TB SSD is up to 18 hours for typical usage, however heavy duty application use with the screen turned up to full brightness will understandably reduce that.
- 2TB SSD models are rated up to 16 hours.

In Passmark, the Intel Core i5 in the new Surface Laptop 5 and Pro 9 provides an average 29% improvement over previous models. This increases to 42% for multi-core performance in Windows 11 using Intel Thread Director.
Graphics
Intel® iRIS® Xe is carried over from the Surface Laptop 4, Surface Pro 7+ and Pro 8. Buyer advice for performance users: Intel iRIS Xe on the Intel® Core™ i7 features 96 Execution Units against 80 for the i5 at a higher clock speed. This results in around 25% higher benchmark scores for i7 models in 3DMark 3DM11. We recommend the i7 model for power users, including content creators and data visualisers. |
New features for Surface Laptop 5
USB-C® 4 + Thunderbolt™ 4
Offers double the USB-C bandwidth of previous models. Supports DisplayPort Alt Mode for connecting up to 5K resolution external DisplayPort monitors without image compression. Thunderbolt 4 adds support for external graphics controllers (including NVIDIA and AMD workstation eGPUs), high speed storage arrays, and high performance docking stations and monitors that support for up to 4K external monitors and daisy-chaining. The Surface Laptop 5 maintains a USB Type-A port for legacy peripherals, including wireless keyboards. |
Discontinued features for Pro 9
4G LTE mobile data with Intel
The option of 4G-LTE mobile data is being discontinued in the Intel version of the Surface Pro 9. Mobile data will be available on the Surface Pro 9 with 5G powered by Microsoft SQ3. This is an ARM-based Windows 64 bit model. The Surface Pro 9 with 5G replaces the Surface Pro X, and removes the Intel processor, Intel iRIS graphics and Thunderbolt 4 features found on the non-5G models. Microsoft has extended availability of Surface Pro 8-LTE and Surface Pro 7+ 4G (while stocks last) for buyers who need mobile data and Intel-based processors. If you wish to evaluate the ARM-based models, please speak to us. |
3.5mm audio port
USB-C ports now on left
While retaining the overall look and feel of the Surface Pro 8 and Pro X, the Surface Pro 9 has moved the position of the USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports from the right hand edge to the left. While this will provide ergonomic benefits to right-handed users, left-handers may be less impressed. This also means that the Surface Pro 9 requires different protective cases and covers from previous generation devices. Despite this, compatibility with the Surface Pro Signature and Surface Pro X Keyboards is maintained, as is the Surface Pen.

Passmark scores show a significant performance leap in mid-range 12th gen CPUs
The latest Intel-powered laptops, all-in-ones, tablets, workstations, and desktops are now on the market with 12th generation Intel® Core™ hybrid core processors. With 10 or more processor cores, the 12th gen combines high performance P cores for single threaded operations with groups of E cores for high performance multi-core operations and high efficiency background tasks.
Improvements were already substantial for 11th generation devices over the 10th gen with the introduction of Intel® iRIS® Xe graphics, which provided a significant performance boost relative to most 10th generation and older chips, which used Intel UHD 620 graphics (first introduced in 2016). Intel iRIS has been carried over in to 12th gen mobile processors.
The new Big-Bigger hybrid-core design offers substantial increases in benchmark performance due to optimisations for both Single Core and Multi-Core processes, which is in line with that seen in ARM CPUs that use Big-Little architecture. In the real world, Intel suggests users will appreciate a 21-27% performance improvement over 11th gen devices in typical applications.
The 12th generation provides a big leap for three year old 8th gen laptops in particular. 8th generation devices are now due for replacement in fleets that operate a 3 year device refresh cycle.

Two tiers of Intel vPro in 12th gen
Intel has also introduced two tiers of vPro to its corporate CPUs, one designed for small businesses (Intel vPro Essentials), and one for enterprise (vPro Enterprise). 11th gen and earlier CPUs were simply vPro or non-vPro.
When to choose vPro Enterprise?
If your organisation uses any of the following features that were previously marketed as Intel vPro, you should opt for Intel vPro Enterprise processors:
- Out-of-band KVM remote control
- Wireless Intel AMT
- Fast call for help
- Intel Remote Secure Erase with Intel SSD Pro.

The Laptop Company supplies and maintains device fleets for critical services including emergency services, DHBs, local and central government agencies, and utility providers. For these teams, as well as the companies that depend on us for their own resilience, we have developed and tested a business continuity plan that works for us in the real world. Given this is New Zealand, we have had the benefit of experience, activating our BCP for events including the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes, as well as the lockdowns of 2020-21. Here's what we have implemented to help mitigate as many of the health and commercial risks as possible, so we can continue to provide consistent services to our customer community while keeping our team as safe as possible.
The following provides some guidance on what we do, and why.
The following provides some guidance on what we do, and why.
Operations:
- Work from Home.
All employees that can work from home are equipped to do so. We sell laptops, so for us this is straight-forward. Internet access, desktop accessories and their ability to accommodate a workspace are all factors we worked with. - Cloud services.
We have migrated a number of services that we use operationally to support our customers from on-premises to the cloud. This reduces our dependence on servers at our premises and their uptime for delivering and supporting critical teams. - Duplication of capabilities.
By having multiple employees who have the training and access rights necessary to fulfil critical roles, we provide operation redundancy for critical roles. - Duplication of facilities.
With service operations in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, we provide the capability to divert service and maintenance jobs between our locations in the event any location needs to close or isolate. We also run duplicate teams split between our Auckland and Wellington offices for managing customer device fleets, with team members who are equipped for work from home - Split workforce.
In our Wellington HQ, essential operations teams are split by floor. Team members do not travel to other floors, share communal spaces with team members from other floors or meet with them physically. Critical roles have duplicate capabilities split team members on different floors.
This helps prevent an infection on one floor from spreading across our HQ. - 100% vaccinated workforce.
Much like 95% of the eligible population, each of our team members have sought to be vaccinated to help protect themselves, as well as those around them. - Mask usage and good hygiene.
Mask wearing is required for all visitors, and our team members are masked for the safety of visitors. Masks and hand-sanitiser are available at each of our locations for visitors. Where our employees are required to be present on-site at a customer location, mask usage and adherence with any additional guidelines set out by the customer apply. - Restricted Access and the Vaccine Pass.
During the Red light setting, all visitors, including couriers and suppliers, are required to present a valid Vaccine Pass as a condition of entry to our locations. Access under the Red light is via prior appointment, which enables us to provide separation between customers in common spaces. - Car-pooling for essential on-site staff.
Public transport is a risk for virus transmission, because of this, most operators will be running at reduced capacity to increase physical distancing. This creates capacity issues that can affect riders. To reduce the exposure of essential on-site staff in our fulfilment and service teams, we have implemented a car-pooling arrangement. This is based on floor-separated team membership and geography. By car-pooling, team members can reduce their exposure to the public while minimising their impact on traffic volumes.
Supply chain:
Covid has disrupted supply chains, and its impact overseas has been felt in New Zealand. We have created additional supply chain redundancy and capacity through:
- Duplicate supplier sources for key brands.
If one source needs to lockdown, we have alternative options. - Sourcing from supply chains outside of Auckland, as well as within Auckland.
This reduces our exposure to local regional lockdowns. - The use of multiple redundant courier and freight suppliers.
This reduces our dependence on supplier workplaces remaining unaffected. - Advanced forecasting for our customers.
This helps our customers secure stock from the factory. - Active supply chain management.
Allows us to source stock from alternative distributors when required through stock and supply chain monitoring within their operations. - Increasing our stock holdings.
Allows us to ship in-demand devices directly without depending on global and national supply chains.
What can you do?
- Equip your team members for work from home.
This includes suitable computers setups, system access, internet, security, and support. If your workplace has specific requirements for desk setups and ergonomics, these will likely apply for employees at home too. Contact us if you need assistance doing this – we have been helping many organisations on this. - Reduce single points of failure in your team.
If you have individuals who perform functions that cannot be done by anyone else, then you cannot afford for them to become sick. Identify your team’s single points of failure and get suitably skilled peers from within their team to upskill to take on their responsibilities in the event of illness. - Create split teams for critical functions.
If your entire staff becomes ill, your business is too. Splitting teams by floors, locations or by on/off days can help your team members create redundancy and reduce the spread of illness. If one team becomes ill or needs to isolate, your other team can fill in the gaps. - Plan your procurement and communicate with your suppliers.
Just-in-time delivery of things that your business needs is the ideal in normal times - but it creates the risk of late or non-delivery when supply chains are compromised. We have been working with multiple organisations who have discussed their requirements and timelines with us. This in turn allows us to forecast and secure stock from the factory, instead of depending on distribution networks alone. A firm customer order is prioritised at the factory for most industries. - Create some room.
All plans go out the window if you don’t have the resources to fulfil your requirements. For us, this meant increasing stock holdings, for you it could mean increasing staff levels for critical activities, reassessing project timelines, increasing cash reserves, or holding spare equipment. - Follow Ministry of Health advice.
Much of the rest of the world has been impacted economically and individually by Covid-19. The actions taken by New Zealanders to date have reduced the impact, and reduced spread throughout our communities. With good luck and good judgment, we will be well placed for a post-Covid world.
